How is Talent Management Different From HR?

Talent management and human resources are intermingled, yet are still different in their own ways. For example, there is plenty of overlap between the software systems for both talent management and human resources.
While HR has been around for decades to help companies manage and support their staff, talent management is somewhat new. Properly defined, talent management refers to a set of organizational HR processes that are designed to attract, develop, engage, and retain productive employees.But how is talent management related to traditional HR?

Talent management is more specifically involved with ensuring that certain people make a good fit for a specific role in a company as well as for future roles that may come up. How Talent Management is Different From HR
There are different ways in which talent management differs from legacy HR processes for hiring, training, and retaining staff.
For starters, hiring, training, and retention of employees was once centralized in HR departments, with talent management being among one of the many duties that were delegated to front-line managers that eventually lead up to the employees in question. For this reason, an entire organization is responsible for these activities.
Human resources is more focused on administrative duties and responsibilities, and deals with things such as payroll, benefits, vacation days, and complaints. On the other hand, talent management is almost solely focused on improving the top talent within a company. Talent management is strategic in nature and embodies a company-wide plan that is associated with business goals, while human resources is more calculated when handling day-to-day management of staff.

Where Does the Confusion Lie?
At the end of the day, a lot of confusion surrounding these two roles stems from the fact that talent management is a rather new concept, and a clear-cut definition of this entity really hasn’t been fully agreed upon just yet. Despite the fact that some people believe that it refers to the management of all staff at an organization, other people may think that it only refers to top-performing employees.
While both talent management and human resources management are both concerned with managing employees, talent management more specifically focuses on involving line managers, who are closest to employees. Talent management tools use top performers to prepare them for specific leadership positions. Talent management software tools offer comprehensive decision support to assist line managers to enhance retention, engagement and productivity of employees.
